SEASIDE, Ore. — Elma’s girls are headed to the championship game of the Seaside Holiday Classic, winning comfortably over host Seaside in the semifinals on Friday.

Elma (8-0) will now take on Astoria in the tournament championship game today. Quin Mikel put up 12 points and had 10 rebounds, leading the Eagles in both categories.

Elma head coach Lisa Johnson said defense and timely shots were the difference in the game.

“A foul-fest in the first half really kept us from getting into any flow. We stayed persistent on our defense,” he said. “Kaelyn Burgher and Kayli Johnson each hit a three in the second quarter to lift us.”

SEASIDE, Ore. — Montesano’s boys could not keep up with Newport’s shooting as the Bulldogs fell to the Cubs in a Seaside Holiday Classic semifinal on Friday.

The Bulldogs (4-1) jumped out to a lead in the first quarter, but the Cubs quickly closed the gap in the second quarter with their 3-point shooting.

Head coach Doug Galloway said his team’s 2-of-16 three-point shooting wasn’t enough when the Cubs heated up from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters.

“They shot a lot of threes and they’re a very good shooting team,” he said. “We tried to trade baskets with them a little bit but we couldn’t catch up.”

Galloway highlighted Evan Bates, who provided good energy off the bench and contributed nine points. L.J. Valley led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

MENLO — Unbeaten Willapa Valley turned in one of its most complete games of the season with a dominant win over South Bend.

Willapa Valley (5-0, 6-0) had five players in double digits and head coach Jay Pearson said it was the best game he’s seen from his team so far.

“It was the first complete game we’ve played all season,” he said. “We did what we needed to do and we didn’t lose concentration.”

Pearson said it was hard to single out one player in particular with so many strong scoring efforts. Logan Walker scored 16 points and Ryon Ashley and Peter Hamilton had 14 apiece for the Vikings.

Raul Mora and Logan Stamos had 10 points each for South Bend.

“We still had three players in double figures with Alexia Thower getting her 28 points and 8 rebounds. Angela Sikora played a sound game on both sides of the ball for 14 points. Estelle Wilson had a great defensive game to go with her 9 points.”
