FOOTBALL

Indians 47, Hyaks 0

OYEHUT — South Bend played safety-first football on Friday — with a large dash of Ben Byington thrown in for good measure.

Byington rushed for 229 yards and scored three touchdowns while the Indians recorded an astonishing three safeties in blanking North Beach in a SWW 2B Coastal Division game Friday night at Lt. Jim Davis Field.

With Byington scoring on runs of 74 and 18 yards and an 11-yard pass from Drew Rose, the Indians (2-1, 6-1) led 33-0 at the half.

Preston Lawhead’s 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter triggered the 40-point running clock mercy rule.

It was the three safeties, however, that proved to be the most unusual aspect of this game.

South Bend defensive end Chase Flynn nailed a Hyak ball-carrier in the end zone and Byington and Josiah Markwell combined to sack the Hyak quarterback in the end zone for first-quarter safeties.

The Tribe’s Cody Jones recorded a safety in the second quarter.

“Our (defenders) were really getting after it,” South Bend coach Shane Byington said. “The safeties were evidence of that.”

Rose ran 12 yards and Jacob Strozyk 41 yards for South Bend’s other touchdowns. Raul Mora kicked six conversions.

Flynn, who had two sacks and four tackles for losses, drew Coach Byington’s praise.

On Friday, South Bend hosts Raymond while North Beach (0-3, 2-5) travels to Pe Ell-Willapa Valley.

Titans 38, Fishermen 20

ILWACO — Breaking open a tight contest with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley remained unbeaten in SWW 2B Coastal Division play by downing stubborn Ilwaco on Friday at Ilwaco.

The seventh-ranked Titans (3-0, 5-2) led only 14-12 at the half. PeEll-Willapa Valley’s Tyson Nissell scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter, but Ilwaco’s Brandon McMullen answered by catching a 20-yard pass from Ethan Personius. A successful 2-point conversion again narrowed the gap to two, at 22-20, entering the final period.

The Titans then put it away on a pair of Max Smith TD runs, from 10 and 6 yards out, in the fourth quarter.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley coach Josh Fluke gave Ilwaco credit for a strong first-half effort.

“At halftime, we had a persuasive talk with the boys and made some adjustments,” Fluke said. “The second half, the defense really stepped up. And Tyson Nissell played like a man possessed, both offensively and defensively.”

Nissell rushed for 182 yards and made 16 tackles. Teammate Peter Hamilton was equally productive, rushing for 156 yards and have a hand in 22 tackles.

Smith’s 8-yard run and quarterback Matt Pearson’s 1-yard run accounted for PWV’s first-half touchdowns.

Fluke also cited the play of defensive lineman Bradley Prestegord.

The Titans return home Friday to face North Beach.

Gulls 35, Wildcats 0

RAYMOND — Patrick Edwards and McCartney Maden each surpassed the 100-yard mark in rushing as Raymond pulled away in the second half to beat Ocosta in a SWW 2B Coastal Division game Friday night at Raymond.

The Gulls owned only a 7-0 lead at the half before breaking it open with two touchdowns apiece in the third and fourth quarters.

Maden, on the verge of scoring midway through the third quarter, fumbled on the 1-yard line and offensive tackle Cole Enslow fell on the loose ball in the end zone. Maden made it all the way moments later on an 80-yard touchdown jaunt.

Edwards’ 2-yard run and Curtis Broten’s 16-yard run in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring. Reese Garcia kicked four conversions and Brandon Gillham one for the Gulls (2-1, 3-4).

Edwards, who rushed for 14 yards on 29 carries, scored Raymond’s first TD on a 12-yard in the first quarter. Maden gained 125 yards on 13 carries.

Raymond coach Luke Abbott cited his offensive line and running backs for making the necessary second-half adjustments. The Gull defense, he added, played well throughout.

“Our front eight did a great job,” Abbott said. “Ocosta’s an option team, so our guys had specific jobs and they did them very well.”

The Gulls make the short trip to South Bend on Friday. The Wildcats (1-2, 3-4) host Ilwaco the same night.

BOYS TENNIS

Bobcats advance

TUMWATER — Aberdeen advanced two singles players and a doubles team to district following the Subdistrict 2A Tournament that concluded Friday at the Tumwater Valley Racket Club.

Luis Garcia and Josh Germeaux, in singles, and the doubles duo of Aaron Larson and Cody Sayres earned berths in next weekend’s district tourney at Mint Valley in Longview.

Oddly, all of the Bobcats exactly upheld their pre-tournament seedings.

The second-seeded Garcia was the runnerup in singles. After drawing a first-round bye, Garcia survived a scare from Centralia’s Zach Kaiser before prevailing, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. He downed Chehalis’ Javier Falero in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to Tumwater freshman phenom Colton Smith, 6-0, 6-0, in the title match.

The fourth-seeded Germeaux placed fourth in singles. Following a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chehalis’ Cade Cameron and a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Smith (who didn’t lose a game in the tourney), Germeaux clinched a district berth with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kaiser. He dropped a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 decision to Chehalis’ Javier Falero in the match that decided third and fourth places.

Larson and Sayres wound up fourth in doubles. Their match scores were unavailable.

Aberdeen’s Aaron Dyer bowed out of the singles competition by dropping a three-hour marathon to Tumwater’s Noah Tompkins, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, in the single-elimination opening round.
