Hoquiam wins fourth straight district golf championship

Led by Josh Burgher and Brayden Dayton, the Hoquiam boys golf team captured the 1A District title on Friday in Tumwater.

Burgher and Dayton finished third and fourth, respectively and teammates Michael Jump (8th) and Tayte Witherbee (9th) also finished in the top 10 to give Hoquiam the 1A District title.

Hoquiam finished with 73.33 points. King’s Way Christian was second with 65.33 points followed by Seton Catholic (44), Monte (34) and La Center (9).

Seton Catholic’s Sean Bell won the individual title, shooting a blistering 69 in Friday’s second round to overtake Burgher and King’s Way Christian’s Cole Sheretz, who finished second. Ball had a two-day total of 147, while Sheretz scored a 156 and Burgher a 159.

Dayton shot an 81 in Friday’s round to place fourth with a two-day total of 164. Montesano’s Payson Parker and King’s Way Christian’s Ty Mairs finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, also with scores of 164 (tiebreaker determined by best aggregate score on the 5th hole). Parker, who shot an 84 on Thursday, rallied to have the second-best score of Friday’s round with an 80.

Jump finished his tournament with a score of 171 with Witherbee two strokes behind him with a 173. Both were cited by Grizzlies head coach Larry Dublanko as being integral to the victory.

“They were incredibly helpful,” he said. “It took all six players to contribute to the point value. It was definitely a team effort.”

Hoquiam had a decided edge heading into the second day of competition, as the Grizzlies held a third of the field after

the cut. Hoquiam had six golfers advance to Day 2, compared to four each for Monte and KWC, three for Seton Catholic and one for La Center.

The district championship is Hoquiam’s fourth in a row.
