FOOTBALL

Indians 72, Cardinals 37

SOUTH BEND — A.J. Sanchez rushed for 234 yards and scored three touchdowns as South Bend walloped Winlock in a non-league football opener Friday night at Millam Field.

Quarterback Ben Byington ran for 185 yards and five touchdowns and Jordan Dockter logged 78 yards and a TD for the Indians.

Although not a school record, the Tribe’s output was the highest in veteran coach Tom Sanchez’s career.

A.J. Sanchez scooped up a Winlock fumble on the game’s third scrimmage play and raced 31 yards for a touchdown. He later tallied on runs of 80 and 11 yards and also had a kickoff return for an apparent touchdown nullified by a holding penalty.

Byington scored on runs of 47, 10, 20 and 52 yards and on a 22-yard fumble return. Dockter tallied on a 17-yard run in the first quarter.

Although they never trailed, the Indians led by only a 32-21 count following a wild first quarter. Their defense stabilized after that, while they racked up 409 yards rushing in the first half alone. They led 56-21 at the half.

“Offensively, we felt pretty good going in and we were able to do what we were capable of doing,” Coach Sanchez said. “Defensively, we’re green in certain positions and they took advantage of us, especially early in the game.”

Among other assets, the Indians were perfect on 2-point conversion attempts, with Dockter, Sanchez, Byington and Cody Jones dividing up those honors.

Dockter also led South Bend tacklers with 14. Josiah Markwell was in on 11 stops and A.J. Sanchez and Teo LaRue each contributed an interception and fumble recovery.

South Bend travels to Chief Leschi on Friday.

Wildcats 58, Warriors 8

WESPORT — It took Ocosta just two plays to take control and roll to a win over Chief Leschi in a non-league 2B football game at Griffin Field on Friday.

The Wildcats (1-0) recovered an onside kick to start the game and then connected on a 30-yard pass play to set up a 4-yard run from Hayden Hoff to take an 8-0 lead.

Ocosta added a safety by Kalvyn Scott a few moments later and capped the quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dereck Thomas to Brandon Thomas to jump out to an 18-0 lead.

The Wildcats continued to pour it on in the second with Kobe Beck scoring on a 13-yard pass just moments into quarter.

Chief Leschi got its only score on a 60-yard pass in the second, but Ocosta answered with a drive capped by a Dereck Thomas 12-yard run. Noah Martin added another score for the Wildcats on a 30-yard catch and Dereck Thomas scored on a 5-yard run to make the score 45-8 at halftime.

Dereck Thomas scored his third rushing touchdown of the night in the third quarter on a 10-yard run and Paris Silver ended the Wildcats scoring for the night on a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“Our offensive line played very well and Dereck (Thomas) had room to run,” Ocosta coach Brian Snell said. “Rushing for 202 yards, obviously they are doing their job. (The line) is a much improved unit from last year. Defensively we played very well and special teams were lights out. Our kids and community needed this type of win. Our kids have been working hard.”

Ocosta hosts Wahkiakum next Friday.

Pirates 23, Titans 6

ADNA — Isaac Ingle ran for 169 yards and a touchdown as Adna spoiled Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s season opener on Friday at Adna.

The erstwhile Central League rivals faced off in a non-leaguer this time as they have been shifted into different divisions of the sprawling Southwest Washington 2B League.

Down 9-0 early in the third quarter, PWV trimmed the margin to three when Kaelin Jurek broke a 75-yard touchdown run.

But Adna’s Connor Weed teamed up with Cooper Viggers on a 35-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter and Ingle provided the coup de grace with an 11-yard yard scoring run midway through the fourth period.

The Titans suffered extensive graduation losses following last year’s state semifinal appearance. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley coach Josh Fluke wasn’t overly discouraged.

“The ball didn’t bounce our way a few times,” Fluke said. “We’ve got some work to do. But by the next couple of games, we’ll be fine.”

One of the few experienced Titans, Jurek rushed for 138 yards on 17 carries. He also had a hand in a team-high 17 tackles.

Tyson Nissell had 15 tackles, Josh Prestegord 14 and Ryan Shepherd 12 for PWV.

The Titans face Morton/White Pass next Friday at Pe Ell.

Mountaineers 31, Hyaks 0

RAINIER — Host Rainier built up a 22-0 halftime lead and went on to blank undermanned North Beach in a non-league opener Friday at Rainier.

Hard-hit by graduation, the Hyaks suited up only 16 players Friday. More are expected to be available for subsequent games.

The Mounties cashed in heavily on North Beach turnovers.

“We have a lot of young kids,” Hyak coach Todd Bridge said. “I am thankful for non-league games to get experience. We will be all right in the long run. Rainier is pretty good.”

The Hyaks will make their first home appearance Friday against Life Christian.
