Monte girls clobber Castle Rock

Bulldogs 72, Rockets 24

MONTESANO — Scoring at least 20 points in each of the first three quarters, Montesano’s girls blew out Castle Rock to remain unbeaten Friday night at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

Scoring came from all over the place for the Bulldogs (5-0), but it was Zoee Lisherness who led the team with 13 points.

Monte head coach Julie Graves liked the offense but was really impressed with the defense.

“We forced 29 turnovers and the helped is get into our transition game and push the pace,” she said.

Lisherness and Samantha Stanfield were key to the team’s ball movement and had four assists each.

Zoe Hutchings also played well and came away with eight rebounds.

Monte junior varsity also won and was led by Mayah Gallinger who had 14 points.

The Bulldogs challenge Class 2A Black Hills on the road on Tuesday.

SOUTH BEND — Unbeaten Ocosta withstood a second-half South Bend rally to capture Friday’s Pacific League game at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Wildcats (3-0, 4-0) led by as many as 19 in the third quarter. With Karley Reidinger scoring 16 of her 22 points in the second half, the Indians came charging back, but never drew even.

“I was real proud of the girls. They got up on their toes and came at them,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “They just ran out of time.

Kristi Raffelson paced Ocosta with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Kjirstin Hopfer added 15 points, Katelyn Denny had 10 rebounds and Kaylee Barnum six assists for the Wildcats.

Hannah Byington had 16 points, Jessica Sanchez seven rebounds and five assists and Katelyn Doyle seven assists for South Bend (1-2, 2-2).

The Wildcats host Winlock this afternoon. The Indians are home against Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

ILWACO — Willapa Valley’s girls could not keep pace with powerful Ilwaco in Pacific League play on Friday.

The Vikings only scored two points in the first quarter and the Fishermen didn’t let them off the hook, piling on with 23 points in the quarter.

Vikings coach Colby Rogers said they could not get adjusted to the speed of the game in time to make it competitive.

“We struggled with pace of play early on and they jumped all over us,” he said. “Ilwaco is a good team and they’re well-coached.”

Willapa Valley (2-1, 3-1) will try to bounce back at home against Northwest Christian on Thursday.

BROOKLYN — Wishkah’s girls pitched a shutout in the first quarter on their way to a comfortable 42-14 win over North River.

The Loggerettes got their first win of the season with the help of a strong performance from Brooke Haskey, who led the team with nine points. Aleah Clevenger and Jesse Thompson were right behind her with nine.

Leanna White scored five points for North River.

Wishkah will take on Hoquiam’s junior varsity team on on Monday and North River will face off against Ocosta’s junior varsity on Tuesday.

AMANDA PARK — Lake Quinault’s girls got off on the right foot to start their season and defeated Crescent in a non-league game Friday.

Both teams started off slow, resulting in a 4-4 tie after the first quarter but the Elks took off from there, dropping in 15 in the second quarter and 26 in the third.

Jayhla Tatro paced the team with 12 points.

“That went better than expected,” said Elks head coach Travis Carstensen. “We don’t have a lot of girls on the roster and we got out there and hustled against a team that had more players.”

Lake Quinault will play Three Rvers Christian on Saturday.

MONTESANO — Montesano’s boys had three players score in double digits on its way to a win over Castle Rock at home on Friday. 72-50.

Montesano got big contributions from L.J. Valley, who put up 21 points, and Sam Winter who had 20. Seth Dierkop and Trevor Ridgway put up 10 points each.

Montesano head coach Doug Galloway said he liked the way his team picked it up offensively in the second half.

“We played a lot better in the second half,” he said. “We had much better energy and ball movement and it led to some more open jumpers.”

Valley was a big part of the team’s offense as a passer as well and came away with six assists.

Monte (3-0) will compete at the Seaside invitational on Thursday.

TUMWATER — Class 2A Tumwater overpowered Hoquiam inside for a non-league victory Friday at Tumwater.

The T-Birds owned a 42-24 rebounding advantage.

“Their size got to us,” Hoquiam coach Curtis Eccles said. “They had 16 offensive rebounds and they wound up scoring on half of them. But I did like our effort. A lot better energy tonight.”

The Grizzlies cut a substantial deficit to eight points in the fourth quarter.

Victor James paced Hoquiam with 20 points, while Bryson Eccles added 14 points. Matt Brown grabbed seven rebounds and Payton Quintanilla contributed five assists.

Hoquiam starting point guard Jackson Folkers missed the game with the flu. Coach Eccles cited the play of Kyle Larsen and Jonny Smith.

The Grizzlies (0-4) return home Tuesday to face Castle Rock.

ELMA — The touring Templestone team from Australia beat Elma on Friday at Elma.

“The game came down to shooting,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi reported. “Rebounding numbers were similar; turnovers were similar. We just shot 30 percent and them 50 percent. They were very good and skilled.”

Raiden Aho came off the bench to score eight points for the Eagles (1-4).

The Eagles host Mount Rainier Lutheran today.
