Five Twin Harbor athletes secure state titles at state 1A/2B/1B track meet

Four Twin Harbors throwers earned repeat titles, while North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship also vaulted her way to the top of the podium on the second day of state track competition.

Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin won her third consecutive state girls 1A shot put championship on Friday at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Raymond’s Karlee Freeman overcame an injury to earn a similar three-peat in the girls discus at the 2B meet at the same location.

North Beach’s Seth Bridge, the defending state champion in the boys discus, captured the 2B shot put title and set a meet record in the process.

Taholah’s Levi Jackson notched his second straight 1B boys javelin title, also at Eastern Washington.

Blankenship captured the girls 2B pole vault title.

Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor and Faith Cardenas were among the top qualifiers in their events at the state 2A meet at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School.

Nursing an injured knee, Raymond’s Freeman still notched her third successive state discus title. Her 136-1 mark was 23 feet below her state-winning throw last year.

“She was doing all standing throws,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “She threw 132 feet in the prelims and she basically won the state title there (and decided not to push it).”

Freeman is also the state leader in the girls shot put, which will be contested Saturday.

“If you can throw 136 and win a state title without a full throw, that’s pretty impressive,” Tully added.

Willapa Valley’s Hallee Layman, seeded 15th in the event, got off a throw of 108-8 — a PR by some seven feet, to earn a sixth-place state medal.

“To come in like that and finish sixth, that’s a pretty good trick,” Valley coach Dave Ege said.

The reigning state 2B champion in the boys discus, North Bridge’s Seth Bridge won the shot put this year in record-setting fashion.

He uncorked a throw of 56-5 1/4 on his next-to-last throw to break the meet record of 55-3 set in 2005 by Clallam Bay’s Adam Lovick. That also enabled him to surpass the leading mark of 53-9 established by Asotin’s Cody Whitmore.

Wilbur-Creston’s Garrett Peoples fell barely short with a mark of 55-3 on his last attempt.

The North Beach senior will attempt to successfully defend his state discus title today.

Bridge was one of three Hyaks to make the top six in the shot. Teammates Ryan Louderback was fifth at 49-3 and Ben Poplin sixth at 47-11 1/2.

Raymond’s Luke Hamilton also earned a state shot put medal with a fourth-place finish at 49-9 3/4.

North Beach’s Blankenship, who had attained a personal-best mark of 11-6 in last week’s district meet, cleared 11 feet Friday.

That was good enough to top Waterville’s Lexi Deishl, the only other 11-foot state 2B vaulter entering the meet. Deishl was second at 10 feet, while Willapa Valley Brooke Friese registered a personal-best 9-6 to take third. Raymond’s Angel Evans barely missed a state medal with a ninth-place finish.

South Bend’s A.J. Sanchez bounded 20-10 3/4 to place finish in the boys long jmp. Raymond’s Marcus Anderson (20-7) placed seventh and teammate Patrick Edwards narrowly missed a medal by taking ninth.

Anderson cleared 6-2 to place fifth in a highly competitive boys shot put.

North Beach’s Mariah Vogler finished sixth in the girls triple jump at 33-6 1/4.

Raymond’s Sean Sath ripped off a personal-best time of 15.05 — one-hundredth of a second off Jayce Freeman’s school record — to lead all qualifiers in the boys 110 high hurdles. Pe Ell’s Tyler Justice, who nipped Sath at district last week, is the second qualifier and South Bend’s Ben Byington also advanced to today’s final.

North Beach qualified third in the girls 4×100 relay.

On Thursday, Ocosta senior Kathryn Anderson placed fifth in the girls 1,600 meters. She lowered her previous-best time by some 12 seconds (and her district time by 17 seconds) with a 5:29.65.

Anderson ran a 1:19 final lap to move up a couple of places. The top eight in each event earn state medals.

“She put it all together and was not going to walk away without a medal,” said Aaron Anderson, her father and coach.

Kathryn Anderson also advanced to today’s finals in the girls 800 meters by qualifying third.

Class 1A

Spradlin threw 44-10 to nab her third straight state shot put crown. The Montesano senior finished six feet ahead of Okanogan’s Jill Townsend, the state leader entering the meet.

Montesano’s Shayla Floch matched her PR of 5-2 to take fourth in the girls high jump.

Hoquiam’s Artimus Johnson bettered his pre-meet seeding by clearing 13-6 to take fourth in the boys pole vault.

Hoquiam senior Ryan Espedal closed out his prep career by earning an eighth-place state medal in the boys javelin with a throw of 163-4.

Hoquiam’s Anthony Nash qualified third in the boys 200 meters and also advanced in the 100.

Hoquiam qualified fourth and Elma fifth in the boys 4×100 relay.

Elma’s Brandon Butcher qualified fourth in the boys 400 meters.

Class 2A

Aberdeen junior Sidor, the state leader in the boys 400 meters entering competition, was the leading qualifier in the boys 400 at 49.85 — only a tenth of a second off his personal best. He also advanced to today’s final in the 200 meters at 22.3.

“Bryan pretty much had control of the (heat) after the first 200,” Bobcat coach April Meissner said. “It was a pretty strong, convincing win, particularly in 79-80-degree weather.”

Cardenas qualified fourth (58.13) in the girls 400 meters.

Class 1B

The state leader entering the meet, Taholah senior Levi Jackson bettered his previous mark by some 12 feet to capture a second straight boys 1B javelin title. His personal-best throw of 181 feet was 11 feet better than runner-up Justin Andrews of Yakama Tribal.

Taholah’s Nettie Mail was fifth in the girls shot put at 33-5 1/2. Naselle’s Lillian Zimmerman won that event at 35-4 3/4.

Mary M. Knight nabbed a pair of state championships. Kaylee Sowle won the girls long jump at 17-10 1/4 and Ian Frost took the boys discus with a throw of 156-8.
