LONGVIEW — Down most of the game, Grays Harbor College made a run to take the lead in the last five minutes and got a dagger 3-pointer from Angela Sikora to put the game away as Grays Harbor College notched its 16th consecutive victory by beating Lower Columbia on Saturday.

Alexia Thrower led the team with 27 points and hit two free throws in the final seconds to help Grays Harbor (4-0, 16-1) increase the lead to three. That gave the Red Devils (2-1, 12-7) one last chance at a tying 3-pointer. With the game on the line, the Chokers were able to make one more stop and forced a contested three pointer that clanged off the rim as time expired.

Grays Harbor had trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter. Katie Brisbois scored 20 points for GHC.

The Chokers will put their 16-game win streak on the line against Tacoma Community College on Wednesday.

LONGVIEW — Lower Columbia downed Grays Harbor College’s men in an NWAC Western Division contest Saturday at Longview.

Details were not reported. The Chokers (1-3, 3-14) host Tacoma on Wednesday.

WRESTLING

Kalama Tourney

KALAMA — Montesano’s Ty Ekerson and Kai Olson were among the champions at Kalama’s Rubber Chicken Invitational on Saturday.

Olson pinned returning state placewinner Kaleb Dennis of Sultan in 5:14 of the 170-pound championship match.

Ekerson captured the 113-pound championship with a 5-3 decision. over Kalama’s Chase Staup.

“Ty and Kai had great tournament and are wrestling well as we head toward the postseason,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger noted.

Montesano’s Andy Fry was co-third at 106 pounds (with 16-man brackets, third and fifth-place matches were not contested). He earned praise from Klinger for rebounding from his first loss of the season.

Monte’s Aaron Lano (113), Lucas Salstrom (120) and Tanner Rossmaier (182) placed fifth.

Other Harbor placewinners from this tournament were not reported.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Vikings 65, Navigators 37

MENLO — Hitting six 3-pointers, Logan Walker scored 25 points as Willapa Valley downed Northwest Christian in a Pacific 2B League contest Saturday at Tenoski Gym.

Rebounding from a loss to Ilwaco, the Vikings (9-3, 12-3) took command by outscoring the Navigators 19-4 in the second quarter.

“We were ready to play this game from the moment we stepped on the bus to leave Ilwaco,” Viking coach Jay Pearson said. “I think the Ilwaco game taught us to play with a little more sense of urgency or hunger and to attack the basket. Tonight, I thought we did just that.”

Ryon Ashley had 13 points and nine rebounds and Matt Pearson 11 points for the Vikings, who committed only 10 turnovers.

VANCOUVER — Montesano stumbled out of the gate in a first quarter that ended up being the difference in a three-point loss to Seton Catholic on Saturday.

Trevor Ridgway kept his team within striking distance with 23 points, with 14 of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Sam Winter also helped the team tighten up defensively and came away with three steals.

The Bulldogs (3-1, 12-5) will return to league play at home against Tenino on Tuesday.

The Indians (1-11, 2-14) host rival Willapa Valley on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Indians 58, Warriors 26.

PUYALLUP — South Bend’s girls easily took care of Chief Leschi (2-11, 2-14) and cruised to a 58-26 road victory on Saturday.

The Indians (7-5, 11-5) got big games out of Alise Rohr and Karley Reidinger, who both had double-doubles.

Reidinger led the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Rohr chipped in with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

South Bend head coach Gary Wilson said his team struggled in a few areas but played a solid game overall.

“We were in control most of the game but it was frustrating with unforced turnovers and missed shots at times,” he said. “The girls had a solid fourth quarter both with their offensive and defensive play.”

South Bend will host rival Willapa Valley on Tuesday.

CASHMERE — Nationally recruited Hailey Van Lith scored 37 points as state-ranked Cashmere trounced Montesano in a non-league game Saturday.

Montesano head coach Julie Graves said her team had trouble guarding the nation’s fifth-ranked high school female player.

“We played hard but didn’t have an answer to Van Lith,” she said. “Van Lith is a sophomore who scored her 1000th career point on Friday night at Omak, when she amassed a school-record 44 points.”

Zoe Hutchings scored 18 points and Samantha Stanfield grabbed 10 rebounds for Montesano’s Bulldogs (11-5)..

The JV team also feel to Cashmere, 64-28. Riley Thoemmes 16 points for Montesano in that loss.

The Bulldogs will try to shake off this loss when they play Tenino at home on Tuesday.

KELSO — Three Rivers Christian pulled away in the second half for a non-league victory over Lake Quinault on Saturday.

Down by only two (26-24) at the half, the Elks (7-5) fell victim to cold shooting in the second half.

“We missed a bunch of shots in the fourth quarter and they just hit theirs,” Lake Quinault coach Travis Carstensen said.

Jaylha Tatro scored 17 points to lead Lake Quinault. Kat Neeland collected 12 rebounds and five assists and Kayleen Spigler-Mercado grabbed seven rebounds for the Elks.

Lake Quinault returns to Coastal 1B League play Tuesday at Mary M. Knight.
