Bergman wins Summer Thunder feature debut at Grays Harbor Raceway

West, Simpson and Youngren also visit victory lane

Racing at Grays Harbor Raceway saw four classes of cars on Saturday in Elma.

The Summer Thunder Sprint Series made its 2019 track debut and the Shipwreck Beads Modifieds class, PHRA Dwarf Cars and Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks were also in action on Saturday.

Cory Sweatman of Aberdeen took the early lead in the 20 lap Cut Rate Auto Parts feature event.

Aberdeen driver Matt White sat in the second position.

Austin Kerrigan of Aberdeen quickly made his way past Sweatman, bringing another fellow Aberdeen driver, Zack Simpson, with him.

Sweatman and White battled for third position as Kerrigan led the way. Lap 4 saw White spin in turn one while racing hard with Sweatman, bringing out the caution.

On the restart, Kerrigan led Simpson as the battle for third heated up between Montesano’s Scott Fritts and Sweatman, racing side-by-side for a handful of laps as Fritts moved into third.

Zack Simpson continued to stalk Kerrigan for the lead, and lap 7 saw Simpson take the top spot in turn three. Simpson continued to pull away, as Kerrigan saw Fritts get to his back bumper and try to take second. Simpson led the rest of the way and went on to pick up another win for the 2019 season. Fritts, Kerrigan, Jack Parshall of Hoquiam and Sweatman rounded out the top five.

PHRA Dwarf Cars

Back for the second time of the 2019 season, the PHRA Dwarf Cars race saw Leo Ward of Happy Valley, Ore. bring the field to the green flag in the 25 lap feature. Mollala, Ore’s Henry Corbin III took the early lead from him quickly.

Ward saw tough company as Justin DeMars of Sandy, Ore and Tigard, Ore driver Shane Youngren were right on his back bumper.

Youngren and DeMars also battled for position. Youngren moved into the second position on a restart, moving Ward back to third. DeMars and Ward battled for third, with Mikie Clark of Vancouver making it a three-car battle for the position.

Youngren kept Corbin III in his sights throughout the whole feature, staying within striking distance to make a move for the lead. Youngren made his move in turn two, racing side-by-side with Corbin III down the backstretch. Both drivers raced next to each other for a handful of laps before Youngren took over the lead and went on to pick up the win. Corbin III, DeMars, Clark, and Ward rounded out the top five.

Shipwreck Beads Modifieds

Twenty modifieds signed into the pits, with Shelton’s Brenton Scnhnitzer leading the field to the green flag.

Tom Sweatman of Cosmopolis and Seabeck’s Kyler Moore were in chase, looking to take over the top spot.

Schnitzer ran the low side of the raceway as Moore moved into the second spot.

Devan West of Shelton sat in the fourth position, staying right with the three front runners.

Moore made a move at the lead on lap four, taking the top spot from Schnitzer.

Moore continued to lead the field as the battle for second was the race to watch between Sweatman and West. Lap nine saw West move into second, as Shelton’s Scott Miller battled with Sweatman for third.

A mid-race restart, saw a bit of three wide action between West, Sweatman and Miller for second. West had more momentum and continued to chase down Moore for the lead.

Lap 23 saw Sean Fox of Rainier, Ore. come to a stop on the backstretch, setting up a green- white- checkered flag restart.

West looked to the low side in turn one and raced even with Moore down the backstretch. West took the lead off of turn four at the white flag and went on to pick up his first career Grays Harbor Raceway feature victory.

Moore, Sweatman, Campbell River, BC’s Lane Zerbin and Bremerton driver David Wolfard rounded out the top five.

Summer Thunder Sprint Series

Twenty-five Sprint Cars setup a strong night of competition for the first appearance of the Summer Thunder Sprint Series.

JJ Hickle of Quilcene led the field to the green flag with Burlington’s Jason Solwold sitting in second.

A battle for third between Colton Heath of Marysville and Seth Bergman, who now resides in Owasso, Oklahoma, was one of the races to watch.

The yellow flag flew on lap three for contact between Medford, Oregon’s Garen Linder and Jay Cole of Shelton, with Cole bringing out the caution.

On the restart, Hickle ran the low side, as Solwold and Bergman ran up high on the 3/8 banked clay oval. Bergman found the high side to be his advantage and worked his way around Solwold for second.

Then Bergman quickly closed in on Hickle and made a pass in turn four on lap seven to take over the lead. Bergman found himself in lap traffic, maneuvered his way through the field and kept distance between himself and Hickle.

A late-race restart set up a three-lap shootout between Bergman, Hickle and Solwold. Bergman timed his restart just right and edged away from Hickle to go on and pick up the feature win. Solwold, Heath and Mt. Vernon’s Eric Fisher rounded out the top five.

Racing resumes on Saturday evening with the Wingless Sprint Series non-wing sprint cars, Northwest Focus Midgets Series, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds and Outlaw Tuners taking to the track. Gates open at 5:30 with racing at 7.
