Aberdeen pins down rival Hoquiam, 48-34

Garnering pins in five of the last six contested matches, Aberdeen defeated Hoquiam 48-34 and earned a season sweep in the Myrtle Street Rivalry.

The non-league dual at Hoquiam Square Garden on Thursday was Senior Night for the Grizzlies and seniors Andre’s Vazquez (138), Jordan Zapata (145) and Artimus Johnson (182) all earned pins in front of the home crowd. With the dual beginning with the 132-pound match, the trio of pins, along with a pin from Hoquiam’s Brady Cummings at 160 and a major decision by Mojo Rose at 170, helped the Grizzlies jump out in front 28 to 12. However, the rest of the Bobcat lineup made quick work of the Hoquiam wrestlers earning four first-round pins to come away with the victory.

“I just wanted to make sure the first (match with Hoquiam) wasn’t a fluke,” Aberdeen boys coach Jimmy Martin said. “I wanted to prove it and the kids did it. We had a plan and they executed it perfectly. It was good to see.”

“It always stinks to loose, but with how it matched up we knew it was going to be razor thin and we would probably needed a couple of decisions at weights that would be hard to come up with,” Hoquiam boys coach Terry Helland said. “I was happy with how our seniors wrestled.”

One of the matches the Grizzlies would have needed was at 195 pounds between Aberdeen’s Dylan Landeglos and Hoquiam’s Jordan Sears. The contest was one of just two matches to reach the third round and turned out to be the match of the night.

Sears grabbed the lead as the clock expired on the first period with a takedown at the buzzer and led the majority of the match. The senior earned a reversal moments into the second period, but Landeglos was able to escape and earn a takedown. Sears led 5-3 after two periods and started on top. Landeglos worked his way free and shot in to take the 6-5 lead with 1:30 to go in period. Sears worked to his feet and looked as though he would be able to escape for the tie when Landeglos tripped him up and rolled him for a pin.

The pin ignited the Bobcats as Jacob Jamieson (220), Skyler Murray (285), Angel Cisneros (113) and Edgar Salazar (120) followed with first-round pins to light up the scoreboard for Aberdeen.

GIRLS

There was no set dual on the girls side, but Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Forks created a round robin battle of sorts to get a few quality matches and some needed mat time for other wrestlers.

Hoquiam seniors Bianca Lopez and Jenna Doll each pinned their opponents in the first round on Senior Night, but they weren’t the only Grizzlies to put a notch in the win column. Alexis Delahanty and Emily Lash each got two pins on the night, while Mercedes Pinnell and Elyse Goulet earned pins in one match.

“All of the girls wrestled to expectation,” Hoquiam girls coach Buck Giles said. “Just coming out and fixing some mistakes we have seen in the past and we saw those remedied tonight. We are ramping up for postseason and fixing mistakes, which was good to see. It is really nice to see (Bianca and Jenna) have that closure here in our gym for Senior Night.”

Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas and Camryn Cook each pinned opponents in the first round, while Bailee Green split her matches.

“We tried getting a few girls who needed mat time some extra matches,” Aberdeen girls coach Craig Yakovich said. “I felt like we struggled in the down position, which is something we are going to need to work on. It was just getting some people some experience.”
