Helen and her twin sister, Hildred, were born to Mary and Nicholas Germain in Aberdeen, Washington, on May 25, 1923. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from J.M. Weatherwax High School in 1941.
In her early 20s, she married Peter Pacana, and together they raised three children, Rich, Wayne and Carleen. Helen worked for PNW Bell for many years, retiring in the early 1980’s. After retirement, she traveled and lived in a variety of places, finally settling back home in the Olympia area for her remaining years. She was known for her generosity, sense of humor and commitment to family. Her home was always open to anyone in need, and was frequently occupied by friends and family alike.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; her sisters, Hildred and Mary; and her brother, Russell. She is survived by her sons, Rich (Kathy) Pacana of Grays Harbor and Wayne (Renee) Pacana of Olympia; daughter, Carleen (Scott) Maynard of Olympia; granddaughters, Lisa Maynard and Kelly Sprouffske; brother, Win Germain of Alaska; sisters, Eunice Good of Tumwater and Catherine Germain of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at St. Joseph Chapel, 1055 Boundary St. SE, Olympia Wash. 98501.
