Rain swelling Western Washington rivers

Steady rain forecast for the next several days has caused the National Weather Service to issue a flood watch for parts of Grays Harbor County and 10 other Western Washington counties.

The Weather Service said the threat of flooding is expected to last until Thursday afternoon. Flooding could occur in Clallam, Jefferson, King, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom counties along all Western Washington rivers.

Heavy rain is forecast in the mountains through tomorrow morning, and the snow level will rise to between 5,000 and 6,000 feet over the North Cascades.

“Flooding is possible on virtually all rivers flowing out of the Cascades and Olympics,” the Weather Service alert said.

But Grays Harbor County Emergency Managment issued a statement today that none of the rivers in the county were expected to reach flood stage.

Weather models predict the heaviest rainfall will be in eastern King and Snohomish counties, where 4-7 inches is expected to fall by Thursday.

Rivers with the highest likelihood of flooding are the Stillaguamish, Skykomish, Tolt, the Snohomish and the Snoqualmie.

A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding but flooding is not yet imminent or occurring.
