Community Foundation awards more than $95,000 in grants

Four grants totaling $95,500 of discretionary funding have been awarded by the Grays Harbor Community Foundation.

The four organizations that were funded through first quarter 2012 grants were Seattle Shakespeare, the Foundation for Private Enterprise Education, the Hoquiam School District and the Mark Reed Hospital Foundation. Their projects included a touring production of Romeo and Juliet for both Aberdeen and Hoquiam schools, as well as a public performance; Business Week at Aberdeen High School; a storyteller assembly and teacher workshops at Hoquiam schools and upgrades of diagnostic systems to help keep patients local for various tests at Mark Reed Hospital.

The grant to Mark Reed Hospital Foundation totaled $75,000, the biggest one-time discretionary grant to date, and an opportunity for the Foundation to extend its reach to East Grays Harbor County. “This was a historic quarter for the Grants Committee in that we were able to see a true need in an area where we have not had much of a relationship in the past, and assist in a big way,” said Dick Warren, grants committee chair for the Foundation. “I see this as the start of an exciting new direction for the foundation, and we are fortunate to have such a generous community that allows us to do this work,” he added.

The Grays Harbor Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, awards quarterly grants in January, April, July and October. Warren noted he was pleased at the variety of grant applications received and the opportunity the Community Foundation has enjoyed to make a larger impact in its grant making.
