Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide you with the tools you need to take care of yourself. This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. Classes consist of six sessions held once a week beginning Wednesday Feb. 22, 2012, at the Aberdeen Senior Information and Assistance office, 2700 Simpson Ave. Suite 205, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Two experienced Class Leaders will conduct the series. Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming will help you take the “tools” you choose and put them into action for your life. You will receive a book, The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class. A donation of $25 to help defray the cost of the book is suggested, but not required, to attend the class. NATIONAL Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Do you have a senior or any family member or loved one with mental illness? nami, the largest affiliate of mental illness in the U.S., has formed a local affiliate, NAMI Washington Coast. They are a beacon of hope and their mission is to support the lives of those affected by mental illness, and their families. AARP DRIVER SAFETY: This class, developed by AARP, is designed especially for motorists 50 and older. Drivers under age 55 may also qualify; check with your insurance company. It covers a wide range of driving situations. There are no tests. A nominal fee of $14 per person is required. AARP members (proof of membership required) can receive a $2 discount. Class size is limited and they are offered on a first come first serve basis, so pre-registration is required. Please note that class times may vary. LEGAL SERVICES: The Northwest Justice Project (NJP) is a not-for-profit statewide organization that provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income people from thirteen offices and four satellite locations throughout the state of Washington. Each year, NJP assists more than 18,000 people in need of critical legal assistance. For details on service delivery and examples of services please view their website at www.nwjustice.org. In addition to providing direct legal services to clients, NJP has become a pioneer in integrating new technologies into the delivery of legal services. NJP operates a toll free intake and referral system called CLEAR (Coordinated Legal Education Advice and Referral), 1-888-201-1014 or (1-888-387-7111 Seniors 60 and over) which serves as a critical point of access for clients throughout the state to obtain free legal help, including advice, brief legal service, and, where available, a referral for further representation. HARBORS HOME HEALTH & HOSPICE FOOT CLINIC: For Seniors or other persons unable to reach or care for their own feet, there are foot clinics throughout Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties at various times and locations. HOME CARE REFERRAL REGISTRY: The Home Care Referral Registry serves consumers/clients receiving in-home care services through the Department of Social and Health Services or those on the COPES (Community Options Program Entry System) program. They are also helping clients receiving services through the Division of Developmental Disabilities find the right Individual Provider. The Referral Registry matches pre-qualified, pre-screened, individual providers with Medicaid eligible clients who need in-home care services.
