Vella was born in South Wenatchee, Wash. For the next 10 years or so, she spent her summers roaming among the plains and coulees of the Columbia Basin, where her dad worked as a crew/chief over orchard-picking crews.

For a short while she was in the Pendleton, Ore. area, but then returned to Washington, in Tonasket.

After high school graduation she was back in Pendleton, working for the telephone system; but then transferred to Walla Walla, Wash. (When people asked her, “Where are you from?”, her answer was “Everywhere.”) Another transfer found her in Spokane, Wash. There she met Bill Garrison, through one of his aunts.

Then she moved to the Harbor in the early 70s, to marry Bill, and settle down to stay, for once.

She continued to work in telephone positions, but switched to the Ocean Spray Markham plant in 1979.

She became known as the “Sugar Lady”, being responsible for tracking the logistical flow of ingredients coming across the country.

The mid 90s found her retiring to her hobbies, reading, piano and crossword puzzles.

About four years ago she became a victim of dementia and on March 11, 2018, died of cardiac arrest.

There will be a celebration of life event at the Westport Winery on Saturday, April 7, from 11:30 to 1:30. Any memorial donations may be directed to Emily’s List, NOW and other organizations with a similar agenda.
