Oregon State Parks bans most fires ahead of total eclipse

Only propane-fueled barbecues and fire rings are allowed due to fire danger

If you’re heading to Oregon to watch the eclipse from an Oregon park or beach you’re going to need to load up on propane; Oregon State Parks has limited your cooking options and campfires to propane-fueled grills and fire pits only. No wood fires or barbecues are allowed.

“Only fuel sources that can be turned off instantly, such as propane stoves and propane fire pits, will be allowed. No propane fire rings allowed at The Cove Palisades State Park and Silver Falls State Park,” read a statement from Oregon State Parks. “Conditions and situations change quickly, so please check with the park you’re staying at for new or additional restrictions.”

The restrictions apply to all Oregon beaches as well. Fireworks are also prohibited in state parks and beaches year round.

Most of the state parks were under a fire restriction anyway, due to hot and dry weather. This announcement just expanded the restrictions statewide effective Aug. 16. Updated information is available by phone Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 800-551-6949. Updates will also be available on the Oregon State Parks Facebook page.
