Witness alerts HPD to single-car crash on SR 109

While getting in a traffic collision is never lucky, sometimes the outcome can be, said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.

A motorist northbound on State Route 109 at Grays Harbor Boulevard swerved out of the way to avoid a small gray coupe that was southbound before watching the coupe leave the roadway to the right, said Myers. The witness indicated it looked like the coupe just drove straight off the curve and then disappeared into the deep brush.

“The small car plowed over some brush but actually went under some taller brush before vaulting off the shoulder and into a tree beyond. The dense brush camouflaged the path of the vehicle,” said Myers.

The witness flagged down a Hoquiam Police Department patrol car and then ran down into the brush to check on the driver.

“From where the vehicle left the roadway to final rest, it was almost impossible to see the collision or evidence of a collision,” said Myers. “It is likely this crash could have gone unnoticed all morning by passing traffic. The driver was lucky the witness was at the right place at the right time.”

Myers identified the witness as Joel Cole.

The small coupe sustained significant damage with airbag deployment, said Myers. The 50-year-old driver from Aberdeen did not suffer any injuries and was able to extricate himself from the vehicle. The vehicle was pulled out and towed from the scene.
