Westport man arrested in altercation with police Friday

A sergeant said the man was known to have mental health issues

A Westport man was arrested after fighting with officers responding to reports of disorderly behavior around his trailer home Friday evening.

The 39-year-old man was screaming and pounding on the side of his mobile home trailer at approximately 6 p.m. in the 1800 block of South Montesano Street in Westport, and at one point threatened to shoot somebody, according to a report by the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office.

The man became violent when the first Westport officer contacted him and subsequently began fighting with the officer. The man damaged the officer’s taser during the altercation and eventually fled into his trailer. The officer received a minor hand injury in the fighting.

Other Westport Police officers and deputies showed up and tried to convince the man to exit his trailer, but he refused. One of the patrol sergeants from the Sheriff’s Office said he was familiar with the 39-year-old, and said the suspect was known to have mental health-related issues. The sergeant also contacted some of the suspect’s family and authorities in Pacific County for additional information.

Officers entered the trailer at approximately 8 p.m., causing the man to throw objects at them. He was then taken into custody, fighting with the officers throughout the arrest.

Medical personnel on the scene performed a preliminary medical evaluation on the suspect, who had been hit with a taser and received a cut on his head during the arrest. The man was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital to be cleared for incarceration before being transported soon after to Grays Harbor County Jail. He is being held for suspicion of two counts of third-degree assault as well as malicious mischief.
