Victim released, suspect charged following hatchet attack in Hoquiam

The 82-year-old victim in last Thursday’s assault by a hatchet-wielding woman has been released from the hospital and the woman has been charged for the assault, according to the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office.

Alicia Marie Lamb, 29, has been charged with first degree assault and first degree burglary for allegedly breaking into two houses, using the hatchet to damage furniture in one home and entering another to attack the 82-year-old man early Thursday morning in the 100 block of Dekay Road, about five miles north of Hoquiam.

The incident began with a woman calling 911 and yelling that she found Lindsey Baum, a McCleary girl who has been missing since 2009. The caller said she was going to kill the person who had her. Deputies and Hoquiam police responded to the area immediately.

Lamb, described as being well-known to the Hoquiam Police Department and recently arrested for charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and trespassing, was also checked into the hospital following the attack, as she had gone unconscious and had told officers she had recently consumed mushrooms.

She was released from the hospital following treatment on Saturday and taken to Grays Harbor County Jail.

Grays Harbor Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate said the man who was attacked received several blows to the head and body from the hatchet. He said the man did exceptionally well to fend off the attacker as she pursued him inside his house.

Prior to the assault on the elderly man, a neighbor called 911 about 5:45 a.m. to say the woman with a hatchet forced her way into a house and was damaging furniture. People in that house were able to get her to leave and they were not injured. Hoquiam police arrived at the scene first and found her at a home across the street.

The 82-year-old was alone in the home and sustained substantial injuries to his head and neck after being hit several times, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The officers were able to get the hatchet away from her before they detained her.
