Transient arrested on suspicion of arson after fire at the Morck Hotel

A 48-year-old Aberdeen transient was arrested after he was reportedly caught on video starting a fire at the Morck Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement from Aberdeen Police Lt. C.J. Chastain.

Police and fire personnel responded to a report of black smoke coming from the building at 215 S. K St. just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The left eastbound lane of Heron Street was blocked for more than an hour as firefighters extinguished the fire, which was at one of the boarded-up windows on the north side of the building just off the alley, said Chastain.

Investigators found a video camera on a nearby building. The business helped investigators review the footage, and the suspect was seen on tape starting the fire, said Chastain. A description was sent to officers in the field, and Chastain said around 3:35 p.m. the suspect was located at the Aberdeen library, still wearing the clothing observed on video. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Aberdeen jail for investigation of first-degree arson.
