Stolen railroad bond wires believed taken for scrap

Removed bond wires disrupt crossing signals, creating safety hazard

Aberdeen Police are looking for the suspect or suspects removing bond wires from the railroad tracks between the 1st Street and Maple Street crossings, according to Lt. Kevin Darst.

Puget Sound & Pacific Railroad reported about 20 bond wires, usually made of copper, were removed Wednesday. Bond wires connect sections of track and, according to the railroad, when the bond wires are cut, crossing signals get stuck in the down position, creating a safety hazard.

Damage was estimated at more than $1,000. Railroad officials said they believed the removed bonds were taken to sell for scrap

This is a community safety issue and the Aberdeen Police Deparment is asking for any help in identifying the suspect or suspects involved. If anyone sees any suspicious activity around railroad crossing, call 911 immediately and report it.
