Aberdeen Police arrested a man suspected of threatening Aberdeen Safeway employees with a knife Saturday as he attempted to shop lift a full cart of groceries.

The suspect, 52, took the full shopping cart to his vehicle without paying, and employees followed him there, police say. The employees confronted the man about the groceries, and the suspect pointed his knife toward them. One employee shouted to the other that the suspect had a knife, and then took a picture of him with it, as well as one of his vehicle’s license plate.

The employees and suspect were both pulling on the shopping cart, but the suspect eventually quit and got into his vehicle to leave.

An officer responding to the call at Safeway interviewed the employees, who showed the officer their photos. The officer recognized the suspect, and the vehicle license plate returned the registered name of the person the officer recalled.

Officers broadcast an Attempt to Locate notice, and not long after officers located the suspect’s vehicle and found him walking a short distance away. He resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers, police say, before he was taken into custody and booked for first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and resisting arrest.
