Results of Karr’s Hill historical property survey to be discussed at July 17 meeting

There will be a public meeting July 17 to discuss the results of a historic properties survey on Karr’s Hill in Hoquiam.

The City of Hoquiam and the Historic Preservation Committee contracted with Northwest Vernacular, Inc., to conduct a historic property survey of Karr’s Hill. The city received a grant from the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation to conduct the survey.

This was a “reconnaissance-level” survey, documenting properties that are 50 years old or older and including only information observable from the public right-of-way, like building type, physical description and architectural style.

The meeting will recap the specifics of the survey and share findings on the area’s development, association with the area’s maritime heritage, and the potential eligibility of surveyed buildings for historic designation. Representatives from Northwest Vernacular will talk about the differences between different types of historic designations and will answer questions about historic property surveys and historic preservation activities in Hoquiam.

The meeting is in City Council chambers at 609 8th Street in Hoquiam at 4:15 p.m.
