Possible explosive device found in Ocean Park

A possible explosive device was discovered along State Route 103 in Ocean Park Monday, according to the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after the suspicious package was discovered Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol personnel were on the scene, where the device was secured and nearby residents were advised. According to the statement, students and faculty at Ocean Park elementary were told to stay inside, but it was not believed there was any danger to anyone on school property.

An FBI bomb technician arrived on the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m. and began the process of containing and removing the device. According to the release, State Route 103 had been diverted away from the “containment area.”

A person of interest, already in custody on an unrelated charge, has been identified and the Sheriff’s Office statement said “there is no information to indicate there is any further danger to the public. That being said, as always, call 911 if you come across any suspicious devices, packages or items.”

By 1 p.m. State Route 103 had been re-opened and the device “x-rayed and securely contained,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. At that time, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office bomb technicians were expected to help with the investigation, and the containment area had been shrunk to affect only two homes and one business. An update at 1:37 p.m. noted the ATF had arrived at the scene, and the only area contained was the area between State Route 103 and North Place on 259th Street, in the area of Hill Auto Body and Towing. Shortly before 2 p.m. the Pierce County techs had arrived and “all agencies are working together to obtain evidence and remove the device from the area.”
