Police still looking into threatening message at middle school

The investigation into threatening remarks left in and outside a classroom that prompted the closure of Hoquiam Middle School Tuesday continued into Wednesday, said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.

“Detectives have talked with about half a dozen students so far into (Tuesday) evening,” he said. “No one has been considered a suspect and detectives are simply following up on rumors and information about anyone who may have made comments, texts, Snapchat messages or anything whatsoever which could have sounded negative or could have had some sort of issues or problem at school.”

The investigation could take some time as investigators conduct interviews and review social media sites attempting to pin down a suspect, or suspects.

“Naturally this has been a wide net of information and supposition, none of which has yet created a direct lead,” said Myers.

A detective spent Wednesday at Hoquiam Middle School and will go to Hoquiam High School if needed, “to try to encourage leads and just be a presence on the campus for the day,” said Myers. “We also have patrol visible in the area whenever possible to help alleviate concerns of parents, students and staff.”

Because the investigation is ongoing, Hoquiam School Superintendent Mike Villarreal said additional details could not be given as of Wednesday afternoon. The identity of the threatened teacher has not been made public, nor has the contents of the two threatening messages.
