Minor fire at Aberdeen Burger King

A fire at the Aberdeen Burger King Wednesday morning filled the restaurant with smoke, but there were no injuries.

According to Aberdeen assistant fire chief Rich Malizia, the fire started in a vent hood above the broiler and the automatic fire extinguishing system failed to engage. Employees attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers but were unable to, but did evacuate customers out of the building safely.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 a.m. Crews from Aberdeen and Hoquiam fire responded and quickly had the fire under control. At 9 a.m., Hoquiam personnel were heading back to their station and Aberdeen firefighters were checking the roof for any remaining hot spots.

No information was yet available about how the fire would affect operating hours.
