Ling, rockfish, albacore and salmon fishing roll on at Westport

There’s still Chinook and coho salmon to be caught at Westport and tuna anglers are filling boats with albacore.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife hadn’t published counts for the week of Sept. 9-15 Wednesday. The latest numbers available show the Chinook area quota at 18% and the coho quota at 33%, with the salmon season slated to close Sept. 30. Quotas set prior to the season were 12,700 Chinook and 59,050 for coho.

Tuna fishing remains solid. The charterboat Predator had 10 anglers fill the boat on a Sept. 13 trip. Bottomfishing is also going strong; the charterboat Slammer took 22 anglers out Sept. 16 and returned with 46 lingcod and 154 yellowtail rockfish.

Derby

The Westport Charterboat Association derby rolls on. Jared Boyd of Tacoma won the daily salmon derby Sept. 15 with a 16.35-pound Chinook. The weekly lingcod winner was a 31.35-pound ling caught by Keith Scott from Auburn. Bonnie Stinson of Kuna, Idaho, took the weekly tuna derby with a 25.05-pound albacore.

Derby tickets are $5 available at charter boat offices. Prizes for the largest fish of the season include $10,000 for the largest Chinook, $1,000 for the largest halibut and tuna, and $1,500 for the largest lingcod and coho. Masaru Tahara of Seattle made the investment in a derby ticket last season on a July 25 trip on the Gold Rush and pocketed $10,000 for his 26.35-pound Chinook.
