Richrod leads challenger Rodgers by two votes in Aberdeen council race

Nelson holds lead over challenger Sinclair in Hoquiam council race after second count of ballots

The second round of general election ballots were counted Wednesday at 4 p.m., and while most incumbents continued to hold strong, Aberdeen City Council Ward 5 Position 10 incumbent Alan Richrod is fighting to stay atop, currently only two votes ahead of challenger Robert Jerrick Rodgers.

At last count, Richrod had 71 votes, just 50.71 percent, to Rodgers’ 69 votes, 29.29 percent.

In the Aberdeen City Council Ward 1 Position 2 race, Tawni Andrews held a lead over challenger Dick Murchy with 175 votes (59.32 percent) to Murchy’s 120 (40.68 percent). Several council races featured only one candidate. John J. Maki, running unopposed for Alice Phelps’ vacant Ward 2 Position 4 seat, had 209 votes in the second round of counting. Tim Alstrom had 322 votes for the Ward 3 Position 5 seat he holds. And Frank Gordon had 223 votes for the Ward 6 Position 11 seat vacated by Denny Lawrence.

Meanwhile, in Ward 4 Position 7, incumbent Karen Rowe kept a comfortable lead over challenger Janae M. Chhith after ballots were counted Wednesday, 451 votes (76.7 percent) to 137 (23.3 percent).

Hoquiam Council

Only one Hoquiam City Council race was contested. In Ward 3 Position 6, Bill Nelson was well ahead of Richard Sinclair in the second count, 165 votes (67.9 percent) to 78 (32.1 percent).

The Ward 1 Position 2, Ward 2 Position 4, Ward 4 Position 7, Ward 5 Position 10 and Ward 6 Position 12 races were all uncontested; the candidates in those races in order were Paul McMillan running for Dave Wilson’s old seat; Jim George filling Richard Pennant’s vacant seat; incumbent Greg Grun; incumbent Denise Anderson; and incumbent Angela Forkum.

Aberdeen School Board

There were a few contested races for Aberdeen School Board. As of the first count, incumbent Jennifer Durney held a 1,738 to 1,144 vote lead (60.31 percent to 39.69 percent) over challenger Devin Backholm for Position 1. It was a different story for incumbent Jamie Walsh in the Position 4 race; challenger William Dyer held a commanding 1,695 to 1,056 vote (61.61 percent to 38.39 percent) lead over Walsh. The Position 2 and Position 5 races had incumbents Erin Farrer and Sandra F. Bielski running unopposed.

Hoquiam School Board

There were only two seats up for grabs on the Hoquiam School Board. Incumbent Chris Eide ran unopposed for Position 4, and as of the second count incumbent Christie Goodenough held a commanding lead over challenger Elizabeth (Lisa) Zaborac, 1,072-343 (75.76 percent to 24.24 percent).

Westport Council

In Westport, council races included Melissa Huerta (Position 1) and Tom Aronson (Position 2) running unopposed. The race between Michael Bruce and Louis Summers wasn’t close as of Wednesday evening: Summers had increased his already commanding lead to 268 votes (66.01 percent) to Bruce’s 138 (33.99 percent).

Cosmopolis Council

In Cosmopolis council races, Debra Moran held a commanding lead over Paul Chrt, 264 votes to 133 (66.5 percent to 33.5 percent) for Position 4. A much tighter race is playing out for Position 5, where Dale Andrews has 205 votes (52.34 percent) to Richard Keller’s 186 (47.57 percent), with Keller gaining several percantage points in the second count.

Cosmopolis School Board

Cosi school board races were tightly contested. The Director District 1 race had incumbent Barbie Smith losing a little ground after Wednesday’s count with only a one-vote lead over challenger Tina Miles, 243-242 (50.1 percent to 49.9 percent). Wayne Cotton held a lead over Lisa Garity, 279-238 (53.97 percent to 46.03 percent). The District 4 at large race had Dave Palmer holding a more commanding lead, which increased slightly after Wednesday’s count, 288-212 votes (57.6 percent to 42.4 percent) over challenger Cindy Grenier. Another contested school board race has Brian Carbaugh facing Carolyn Lande for the North River School District Position 2 seat. After the second count, Carbaugh had 23 votes to Lande’s 11 in Grays Harbor County; Pacific County will not count again until next week, but Tuesday evening had it a dead heat at nine apiece.

Wishkah School Board

Other races for school board in the Wishkah School District (Denney VanBlaricom and Travis Warren), Ocosta School District (Scott Jones and Hillary Bearden) and North River School District (Robert Sholes and Bethany Mizushima) featured candidates running unopposed.

County Treasurer and Port Commission

There were only two countywide races in Tuesday’s general election: Treasurer and Port of Grays Harbor Commissioner 2. In the former, Ken Albert, who was appointed to the position last November and was running unopposed, had 9,167 votes at the second count provided by the Grays Harbor County County Auditor late Tuesday. Jack Thompson was running unopposed for his fifth six-year term on the Port Commission; he had 9,354 votes after the second count.

There will be a third round of counts Thursday at 4 p.m. As of Wednesday, 11,546 ballots had been tabulated, which makes for a countywide voter turnout of just over 28 percent.
