Hoquiam, Cosmopolis, Aberdeen fire team on K Street blaze

No one home during Thanksgiving evening blaze, cause under investigation

Hoquiam Fire, with the assistance of Aberdeen and Cosmopolis fire departments, teamed to knock down a house fire in the 500 block of K Street in Hoquiam Thanksgiving evening.

Crews arrived to find the home ablaze around 6 p.m., and Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers described the fire shortly after as “a full involved structure fire.” The home was not occupied at the time of the fire; the residents, who were apparently in the process of moving out of the house, were at a relative’s for Thanksgiving dinner. Firefighters battled the blaze “from a defensive position, as the roof had partially collapsed,” said Myers, who added, “During the initial course of the fire, explosions and flashes could be heard and seen from within the home, likely caused by fireworks ignited by the blaze.”

The fire was “knocked down” around 7:15 p.m. Firefighters were able to rescue a pet turtle from the scene, but a small dog was reportedly missing. When contacted Friday morning Myers said, “As for cause and origin, we are awaiting that determination from HFD.” He said he would describe the house as a total loss, but said that is also a call for the fire department to make. A source at Hoquiam Fire who was not on the scene of the fire had no additional information when contacted Friday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
