Grays Harbor unemployment rate rose a full percent in December

Grays Harbor at 7.2 percent, Pacific at 7.4 percent

Grays Harbor County’s unemployment rate rose from 6.2 percent in November to 7.2 percent in December, but the county has dropped from fourth highest to 10th in county unemployment levels, according to the latest numbers from the Washington State Employment Security Department.

Of the civilian labor force of 28,470 in the county, 26,420 were employed. That left the total of unemployed in December at 2,050, 7.2 percent. This is down significantly from 2011, when it reached 13.6 percent. The average rate for 2016 was 8.7 percent.

In Pacific County, the unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, ninth highest in the state. There, out of a civilian labor force of 8,294, 7,684 were employed in December; that leaves 610 workers unemployed.

The county with the lowest number of unemployed remains King County at 3.6 percent. The most unemployment is found in Ferry County at 14.1 percent. According to Employment Security, the state gained 6,100 jobs in December and unemployment statewide is at 4.5 percent.
