Flooding forecast for local rivers early next week

Local rivers are expected to rise significantly and possibly flood late this weekend and into early next week due to heavy rains throughout Western Washington.

In particular, the Satsop and Chehalis Rivers are forecast to experience minor flooding late Monday, according to Charles Wallace, deputy director for Grays Harbor County Emergency Management, but all area rivers could potentially flood, he said.

The Chehalis is predicted to crest at 21.49 feet in Porter at 10 p.m. Monday night, just over the 21-foot mark for flooding used at Porter. Meanwhile, the Satsop is forecast to crest at 34.16 feet at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon, which is barely over its own 34-foot mark for flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, the brunt of the rain will come late Sunday night and into Monday, but it isn’t as severe as initially advertised, with more severe rain in Canada than what was initially reported. Still, the National Weather Service said there’s always a chance rain could redirect itself and hit Western Washington hardest.

The increased rain and flooding potential has also increased the chance of landslides as soil becomes increasingly saturated.
