Deputies arrest burglary suspect on Wishkah Road

One suspect in custody, another still at large, both have ‘extensive criminal histories’

One suspect is in custody and a warrant is being sought for a second after a home on Wishkah Road was burglarized Monday morning.

A resident of the 5300 block of Wishkah Road came home a little after 10:30 a.m. Monday to find a man running from his house carrying a pipe and other items, and what appeared to be a pistol holster on his hip. The man jumped into the passenger seat of a nearby car and fled south on the road. The car stopped abruptly in the 4900 block with an apparent flat tire. The suspect seen exiting the home ran into the woods and the vehicle continued southbound. The resident, who had followed the suspects, returned to his home and called 911.

Several Grays Harbor County Sheriff deputies responded, along with Fish and Wildlife agents and a K9 unit. Just after 11 a.m. a deputy saw a man coming out of the woods in the 4800 block of Wishkah who matched the description given by the resident and placed the man under arrest.

The victim returned to the scene and said a handgun had been taken from his house. He positively identified the suspect as the man who he had seen fleeing his home, and said replacement pistol grips found on the suspect were for the handgun that had been taken from his home. The K9 unit did a reverse track and found additional items that came from the victim’s home, and other items possibly from a different crime.

The suspect was a 35-year-old transient from Aberdeen, according to Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate. Deputies obtained information during his arrest that led them to a residence in the 2700 block of East Hoquiam Road. At that location, deputies found the white car, a 1992 Acura Integra, used in the crime. The driver of this vehicle was identified as a 40-year-old Elma man who fled in a different vehicle prior to deputies arriving. The Acura was impounded as investigators pursued obtaining a search warrant for the car.

Both suspects are convicted felons and have extensive criminal histories, according to Shumate. The arrested suspect was booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail for first degree burglary, and deputies are obtaining a warrant for the second suspect still at large.
