Brook Priest and Michael Bruce interested in hospital board seat

Board likely to make a decision next month

Former Westport mayor Michael Bruce and Brook Priest, a Westport businesswoman, are being considered to replace Armando Juarez Jr. on the Grays Harbor Hospital District 2 board.

Juarez resigned recently, saying his job takes him out of town frequently and he can’t devote enough time to board activities.

The board will choose his replacement and may do so as early as next month’s meeting, said Tom Jensen, chief executive officer at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. The board solicited prospects to fill the term that ends in 2019. A third person, David Dutton, the fire chief in Cosmopolis, initially sought the seat, but withdrew his name from consideration.

Priest owns the Aloha Alabama restaurant in Westport and Vacations by the Sea, a complex of condominiums on the beach in Westport. She is the former owner of the Half Moon Bay Bar & Grill at the Westport Marina.

She has a civil engineering degree from UCLA and a master’s in business from the University of Washington, according to her resume. She is or has been a board member for several non-profit organizations in the Westport area.

Bruce was Westport mayor from 2004 to 2015. He recently lost a bid to join the city council. He was a member of the Concrete Town Council before moving to Westport and says that between the two towns he has served 18 years as an elected official.

He currently works part time for Westport Seafood Inc., as a government compliance consultant after retiring from teaching in 2010. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Washington State University and a master’s in public administration from Strayer University.
