Aberdeen home destroyed by fire Monday; Elma home damaged by blaze Tuesday morning.

Home on North Thornton Street a complete loss, second structure damage limited to exterior

An Aberdeen home was destroyed and two other homes were damaged by fire in two separate incidents earlier in the week.

Aberdeen Fire Department Battalion Chief Dave Golding said a home in the 900 block of North Thornton Street was fully involved in flames when Aberdeen and Hoquiam arrived on the scene at 5:10 a.m. Monday. A second structure was involved and a second alarm was called. Firefighters set up a defensive position on the fully involved structure while fighting the second blaze from the outside. Golding said both structures were unoccupied at the time. The first house was a total loss, he said, while the second home sustained damage to its exterior.

Twenty-two firefighters responded on one command unit, three engines, three medic units and one ladder truck. There were no injuries to firefighters or to the public and the fire was under control in just over an hour, said Golding. The original structure was in the process of being repaired from another fire in June, and damage to both properties was estimated at $155,000.

EAST COUNTY

In the early morning hours Tuesday, Grays Harbor Fire District 5 was dispatched to a structure fire on Twin Oaks Lane, near the Elma Airport off Wenzel Slough Road. Arriving crews found a garage burning. The garage is attached to a home.

Fire District 5, Elma Fire, McCleary Fire and Fire District 12 teamed up to tackle the fire, and while the garage was a complete loss, damage to the home itself was moderate, according to Fire District 5 spokesman Brian Baldwin. The fire was reported at 3:46 a.m. and was extinguished at 5:23 a.m. The Red Cross was called to provide shelter for the residents of the home, added Baldwin, who said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
