Aberdeen Armory Building demolition begins Monday

The Aberdeen Armory Building, former home of the Aberdeen Museum of History, on East Third Street is coming down starting Monday.

The building at 117 E. Third housed the museum, the Coastal Community Action Program (CCAP) and a senior center until a fire June 9, 2018, gutted the building.

According to a statement from Stacie Barnum, Aberdeen Parks Director, streets adjacent to the site will be partially closed during work hours, affecting the eastbound lane of Third Street and the southbound lane of I Street.

Rognlin’s Inc. submitted the winning bid for the demolition of just under $500,000, which was approved by the City Council at its Sept. 30 meeting. That bid included salvaging items of historical significance for the city, including the arch above the entrance and a newel post, an upright post that supports the handrail of the stairwell banister. Barnum said a cornerstone will also be salvaged. These salvage items were included in the bid at the request of the city Board of Museum and History and are planned to be used in the future museum, said Barnum.

There are no plans at this time for use of the site once the building is demolished, said Barnum.
