Explore beautiful Ocean Shores during the annual Sand and Sawdust Festival

Great art can come from the roar of chainsaws or the serenity of the sea

Ocean Shores is an absolute jewel on Washington’s Pacific coast, with tons of things to do any time of year. But according to Jody Cadle of the Ocean Shores Chamber of Commerce, June 28 to 30 is an especially great time to visit.

That’s when Five Star Dealerships presents the annual Ocean Shores Chamber of Commerce Sand and Sawdust Festival.

“It’s really an amazing place because we have so much to do in this area,” she says. “And the festival is one of the favorite events of western Washington, because it encompasses so much of our natural resources and celebrates the artists in our area.”

The “sand” part of the festival obviously refers to the magnificent beach. The sawdust comes from roaring chainsaws as they finesse huge blocks of wood into intricate sculptures.

Cadle shares 7 top ways to enjoy the Sand and Sawdust Festival:

  1. “Watch professionals raise magical sand castles and other sculptures out of the sand! These constructions are amazing, but appreciate them while you can – they don’t last forever!”
  2. “See the ancient art of sand drawing with local artist Justin the Circler. It’s something that people have done forever – and we have such a great beach for it because it’s so deep and broad.”
  3. Try it for yourself! We have workshops with professionals teaching you how to build your own sand castles, and Justin will teach you how to do the sand drawing. You could go home with a newfound talent!”
  4. “Watch incredible chainsaw carvers create large-form wood statues right before your eyes! It takes a light touch with heavy tools to create these finely-detailed carvings, and we have the world’s best carvers for you to see.”
  5. “And if you love their art, you can buy it. The pieces they make are auctioned off every day. You can take home your favorite and say you saw it being created!”
  6. “See the great work of our other local artists at the Associated Arts of Ocean Shores Juried Fine Arts, 3D & Photography Show in the Convention Center.”
  7. “Just visit us! We have absolutely wonderful offerings and all kinds of small businesses – everything from the Seahawks specialty store to ice cream, coffee and all kinds of great places to eat.”

“It’s a great family-friendly way to spend the weekend because there will be things going on Saturday and Sunday. It’s so much fun for every age,” Cadle says.
