Aberdeen’s entrance park project was favored by a vote of 4,236 to 2,970 but lacked 88 votes of the necessary 60 per cent majority and therefore failed to pass, an official recapitulation disclosed today.

“I believe it was a critical decision on Aberdeen’s part,” L.G. McClellan, chairman of the planning committee declared.

“The cost would have been nominal. It would not have ‘mortgaged every home’ as opponents charged. It was like a man deciding to buy a new suit when his old one becomes shabby. If Aberdeen is content to remain shabby, there is nothing more to be done. But don’t let us say we couldn’t have afforded it. That’s ridiculous.

“At least a dozen building owners in the lower end of town had planned extensive improvement and remodeling if this plan had been adopted. These plans will be abandoned now.”

About 120 Harborites turned out at Aberdeen City Hall this morning to hear Ralph Koal, Grays Harbor College instructor, pay tribute to veterans in special Veterans Day observances sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Weatherwax High School band, directed by Hampton Wines, played four numbers and Robert Rottle, standing on the The Daily World building roof, sounded a slowly moving taps.

Koal said, “I am thankful that I went and came back. I am thankful my sons went and came back. But my gratitude is lessened by the memory of those brave men who did not return.”

Cindy Kristrom, a seventh-grader at Hoquiam Middle School, realized every kid’s dream Thursday.

Cindy, who wants to be a math teacher, got to be “Principal for a Day” by selling $750 worth of Christmas items in a fundraiser to benefit the school’s sports and computer programs. Principal Jim Northcutt had to attend all of Cindy’s classes while she ran the show.

Cindy, daughter of Sheila and Karl Kristrom, expected the principal’s job to be difficult and planned to keep a journal to detail the challenges of the day. “I usually don’t get this much attention,” she said. “It guess it’s because I’m special today.”
