Symphony performance to spotlight 3 rising stars

The concert, titled “A Gathering of Friends,” will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop Center.

The Grays Harbor Symphony’s fall performance will be held this weekend.

The concert, titled “A Gathering of Friends,” will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop Center for the Performing Arts.

Conductor William Dyer has invited three up-and-coming Harbor natives to perform with his community orchestra:

• Sheri Oestreich, a Hoquiam High School alumna and Central Washington University graduate, now is working on her master’s degree in flute performance at Texas Christian University. With every performance, her goal is to paint a musical picture that will take her listeners on a journey. Oestreich now lives in Arlington, Texas, where she has been working as a private flute instructor and freelance musician for the past five years. On Sunday, she will be performing “Poem for Flute and Orchestra.”

• Michael Fagerstedt is a fourth-year bass-baritone studying vocal performance at California State University-Fullerton. The Aberdeen High School alumnus currently performs with the CSUF University Singers and has toured Spain with the group. He also will be singing in Carnegie Hall in February. For the symphony concert, Fagerstedt will be performing “Mache dich, mein Herze, rein” (from St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244), and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”

• Gordon Shaw has been playing cello for over 10 years. He graduated from AHS in 2017 and now is at Washington State University, finishing his undergraduate degree in music composition with a minor in music tech. He has studied abroad in Italy and performed at Carnegie Hall. On Sunday, Shaw will be performing “Concerto for Two Cellos, RV 531,” with symphony member John O’Brien.

Another highlight of the evening will be the showing of the Charlie Chaplin classic “A Dog’s Life.” As the 33-minute silent film runs on the big screen, the symphony will perform the soundtrack in real time.

Tickets are available for $15 in advance at www.ghc.edu/bishop, or at the box office 45 minutes prior to curtain. Children 12 and younger will be admitted free.
