‘Star Wars’ coming to 7th Street

The 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam will offer three showings of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” on the big screen this weekend.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available for $6 each at City Center Drug, Crown Drug and Harbor Drug; online; or at the door 30 minutes prior to each show.

The film is set 19 years after the formation of the Empire. Luke Skywalker is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of the evil Empire.

After Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in a lightsaber duel with his former apprentice, Darth Vader, Luke proves the Force is with him by destroying the Empire’s dreaded Death Star.

Despite being called Episode IV, this was the first film in the “Star Wars” franchise. It was originally released in 1977, but this showing is of the “special edition” remaster released in 1997.

Dissatisfied with the original theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars film, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” creator George Lucas altered the films in an attempt to achieve the ideal versions that he could not initially due to limitations of time, budget and technology.

Some of those changes met criticism and outrage from fans and critics. Despite widespread negative response to many significant changes, critics also felt that some of the smaller changes were improvements.

Meanwhile, at a local watering hole not too far, far away, The Place to Be — located around the corner from the theater, at 710 J St. — will be decorated with a “Star Wars” theme and will be offering specially created cocktails before and after the showings on Friday and Saturday nights.
