With an expanded focus and a name to match, the Ocean Shores Razor Clam & Seafood Festival also has colorful poster art created by a local painter.

Presented by the Quinault Beach Resort Casino and produced by the Ocean Shores/North Beach Chamber of Commerce, this year’s shellfish and coastal culinary celebration will take place March 16-17 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center.

A news release announced a collaboration with Associated Arts of Ocean Shores to select Karin Malzan Phifer as the poster artist for the 2019 festival. “Karin’s whimsical and delightful color pencil art, ‘Underwater Playdate,’ introduces a greatly expanded Razor Clam Festival,” the release said.

Phifer traces her artistic roots back to quilt-making in the 1980s. In subsequent years, she taught, published, exhibited and sold her fiber art in Germany, Switzerland and the U.S. Art became her full-time occupation in 2001, when she moved to Tucson, Arizona. There, she explored in depth the skill of drawing and added it to her repertoire.

In 2013, she and her husband, driftwood sculptor Stephen Phifer, moved from Arizona to Washington, where they opened Sandphifer Gallery in 2016 in Pacific Beach.

Quinault Beach Resort & Casino is presenting sponsor of this year’s festival. Gold sponsors are The Daily World, Bennett’s Seafood Shack, Oyhut Bay and the Weed Shack.

“The Clam Festival is the celebration of our local life, culture and foods, the relaxed pace of life at the beach, and our razor clam digs,” the news release said.

Clam digs are tentatively scheduled both days.

The festival will be open until 8 p.m. Saturday, then close at 3 p.m. Sunday, just before low tide at about 4 p.m.
