Ocosta wins regional Knowledge Bowl Meet, moving on to state

The team defeated the defending champion, Pope John Paul II of Olympia, to bring home the title.

Ocosta High School’s Knowledge Bowl team came out on top at the regional Knowledge Bowl Meet in Tumwater this month.

The Wildcats defeated the defending champion, the Pope John Paul II Eagles of Olympia on Feb. 8 to bring home the title. The final score was 140-113.

Led by seniors Daniel Quinby and Gerrick Sweet, Ocosta jumped on top of its division after the written round of questions, leading 39-32 over the Eagles. PJP increased its lead to 3 points after the first oral round. The lead narrowed to 3 after the first written round, but the Wildcats increased their advantage to 13 after the next round.

The final two rounds saw the lead increase for the Cats to 17, then 23, heading into the semifinal rounds. In the semifinals, Ocosta beat Toledo and Northwest Christian 12-9-7, putting them into the finals against Pope John Paul II and Adna.

Ocosta scored early and often in the finals, defeating the Eagles 20-8, while Adna scored 4 points.

Ocosta now heads to the state tournament, to be held March 23 at West Valley High School in Yak­ima.
