The Casey Hardward and Electric company store, established 17 years ago by P.H. Hoonan Jr. and E.P. Casey, was sold Friday to Tom Brennan, it was announced today.

The store originally was located at 212 E. Wishkah and moved to its present location at 106 W. Wishkah in 1934. Hoonan purchased Casey’s interests in the business in 1930 when Casey retired.

Some of the stock was moved Saturday to Brennan’s and the rest will be moved as soon as possible. By purchaseing the stock at Casey’s, Brennan said, he was able to add much fine merchandise that would be almost impossible to get at the present time.

Employes of the Harbor Plywood Corporation, effeciently trained in fire fighting, today were praised by Fire Chief Charles Borum for the quick quelling of a “flash” fire about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon which threatened complete destruction of the big port dock plant.

Intense heat from the drier ignited veneer dust and flames shot upward with explosive rapidity, bursting through a ventilator and igniting the tarpaper roof. Smoke bellowed above the plant for several hundred feet and many citizens who saw the fire from high points in the city believed the blaze was completely out of control.

Hoquiamites Robert Dalrymple and Brian Fletcher, both 18 years old, have already achieved two things in their young lives.

As of yesterday, they became men — in the eyes of the United States Marine Corps, when they graduated with their Marine Platoon at ceremonies at the San Diego Marine Corps Recruiting Depot.

That climaxed eight weeks of Marine “boot camp” and hell all Marine recruits go through in order to become a member of the world’s toughest fighting outfit.

The other thing they did was to become a part of Washington’s “Evergreen State Platoon” a group of 75 new Washington recruits sworn in at the State Capitol in front of Gov. Dan Evans who gave them his blessing at that time.

That platoon is the only special Washington State Marine Platoon on record, according to Maj. Richard A. Noll, head of state Marine recruiting.

The “World Class Scholars” program funded by the Grays Harbor College Foundation was endorsed by the GHC Trustees and the Aberdeen School Board Monday.

Students must agree to meet 17 requirements — including learning how to negotiate conflicts and becoming computer literate — by the time they graduate from high school.

In return, they are promised acceptance to any GHC program for which they qualify; credit for college-level work completed in high school and scholarship assistance through the GHC Foundation to pay tuition and other bills if money is too tight.
