• Amill Yakovich, 24, Aberdeen Marine corps corporal, has been promoted to sergeant and sent overseas to a combat zone, according to word received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Yakovich of Montesano. The marine is married to the former Dorothy McKay of Aberdeen and has been in the service since 1940.

• With the rationing of coffee fast approaching, some Harbor restaurants and cafes have raised the cup price to 10 cents while others raised it to seven. Most were planning to serve coffee only with food items once rationing starts.

Some observers forecast a return to the practice, prevalent immediately after repeal of prohibition, of serving newly legalized beer only with food. At that time, many places served a pretzel or two with each glass, thereby observing the “food with beer” regulation in fact if not in spirit.

A fighting Aberdeen Bobcat eleven this afternoon started a 43-yard drive in the third quarter that netted a fourth quarter touchdown and a 7 to 0 victory over a determined Hoquiam team in the 38th renewal of Grays Harbor’s Turkey Day grid classic at Olympic stadium.

The Thanksgiving Day win was the second straight victory for Aberdeen under Coach Chuck Semancik.

A crowd estimated at 5,000 persons witnessed the stubborn duel. Last year 7,000 spectators crowded the same stands but school officials expected a diminished crowd this year with hundreds of men in military service and most of the industrial plants expected to operate.

Bonnie, a 10-year-old Dalmation, waits every afternoon at the end of the driveway on Monohon Landing in Raymond for members of the Zack Brown Jr. family to deliver The Aberdeen Daily World which she then delivers to the Walcott family residence.

Once in a while the dog will miss the Browns but on those occasions she knows where to find the paper, sticks her head into the paper tube and retrieves the paper.

There was no special training, says Mrs. Walcott, as the dog simply picked up the chore bit by bit and has been doing it on her own for a good number of years.

Kurt Loertscher, a senior outside linebacker from Montesano, played a significant, if unsung, role in Washington State’s 42-23 upset of archrival Washington Saturday in snowy Pullman.

He was credited with eight tackles, only one off the team lead. he had the first sack of Husky quarterback Mark Brunell. and the somewhat uncharacteristic uppercuts of joy he delivered after virtually every key stop epitomized the emotion that fueled the Cougars.

“I was pretty excited,” the 22-year-old Loertscher admitted with a laugh. “I was tingling for most of the game.”

Ironically Loertscher often lined up opposite Aberdeen’s Mark Bruener, the Huskie’s starting tight end. “He’s going to be a great player,” the 1988 Montesano grad related. “He’s a pretty good blocker.”

A 1977-model Grays Harbor Transit bus has been refurbished and repainted into the same black and red DARE insignia that can be found on bumper stickers and T-shirts all over the country.

Police officials who initiated the idea say they hope the bus will serve as a constant reminder for every youngster who has graduated from the DARE program to stay off drugs.

Fred’s Auto Body and Towing of Hoquiam did the painting. Holcomb Upholstery of Aberdeen re-did the seats on the bus. The bill was divided among the Transit Authority, Aberdeen and Hoquiam Police and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Department.

Aberdeen Police Chief Bill Ellis said the law enforcement agencies used drug seizure money to pay their portions of the project.
