It’s great to be home with loved ones, but Machinist’s Mate First Class James Russell Mueller is anxious to get back into the war and “get this mess over as quickly as possible.”

His craft was damaged in the Solomon battle allowing him to come home after a two-year absence for a reunion with his fiancee, Miss Anna May Ingram, his sister Mrs. Garnet Carlton and other relatives. He has been in the navy five years.

“Even with the odds against them, the American sailors and airmen are doing a great job,” he declared. “Morale is high among our seamen and they are anxious to get this job over in a hurry. You have to take our hats off to the navy airmen for their ‘do or die’ fighting.”

The federal edict limiting net salaries after taxes to $25,000 a year hit Hollywood today.

Bing Crosby, whose salary in 1941 totaled $400,640, said he’d obey the law and gladly. “It’s okay by me,” he said.

Miss Betty Grable, whose curves and corn-colored hair have helped her into the high salary brackets, snapped, “Money doesn’t mean anything, anyway.”

Wallace Beery, who’s been a big-time movie star for 31 years, pointed out that a man with a large income over the years usually has investments and other commitments which call for large chunks of ready cash. He said he’s get by. “Just barely,” he added.

Many a movie star is in the army now and need not bother about high finance. Clark Gable, for instance, who earned $357,500 last year, now is earning $1,800 as a second lieutenant in the air corps.

It was a normal day for Cosmopolis teen-ager Mari Fradenburg — normal until she got a call from New York City and learned that her voice was going to be heard all over the nation on the U.S. Army’s popular radio program, “The In Sound.”

Host Harry Harrison telephones teens all over the county to find out what the top record is in their area. The complete conversation is tape recorded — along with the top tune. Miss Fradenburg told Harrision she listened to “The In Sound” on KGHO and noted that the top tune in the Harbor area was “Anything Goes” by Harpers Bizarre.

Add Elma to the growing list of three-game Bulldog victims.

Montesano rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the first game to make short work of East County rival Elma, 15-12, 15-4, 15-7 in a South Central League volleyball showdown Tuesday night in Montesano.

The three-game win — which is becoming rather routine for the Lady Bulldogs, who have played only one five-game match all year — improved Monte’s record to 7-0 in league.

Megan Prkut had 16 kills for Montesano and Miranda Plummer was credited with five. Almost all came off sets by Julie Mattson, Bulldog coach Debbie Gibson noted.

There was a Halloween “mortif” for Wednesday’s meeting of the Aberdeen Rotary Club as members gathered for lunch at the Whiteside Funeral Chapel.

The elaborate undertaking featured club president Wes Peterson emerging from a coffin, with Grim Reaper Bud Whiteside as host. Peterson usually puts the bite on members with numerous fines and was expected to be out for blood. Instead his remarkably bland life was presented in a video spoof of eulogies.
