Quinault high school seniors and their chaperone returned Sunday night from the annual Senior Sneak. Leaving Quinault Thursday night, the group went to Tacoma, Ginko forest, Soap lake, Dry falls, Coulee dam, Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They returned by way of Walla Walla and the Columbia river highway.

• Building model planes, buying war stamps, hunting for scrap metal — these things are just as vital to victory as the front-line fighting, and every school child can and should take part in them.

That was the message brought to Aberdeen junior high school students today by Charles Dunn, 22-year-old ensign, who survived the sinking of the carrier Wasp in the Solomon Islands sea fighting.

Ensign Durr is a brother of W.H. Durr, junior high teacher the past six years. The navy man spoke at a special assembly arranged while he is visiting the Aberdeen teacher.

• Dr. B.F. Rambo showed real ingenuity this weekend when caught in a severe storm at night while elk hunting with A.P. Wilson near Pe Ell.

Wilson made a kill and left Rambo to skin the animal while he went to bring the car nearer the scene. But when he tried to return to the camp, he couldn’t find it. Then a Sunday night storm broke over everything.

Realizing he might have to spend the night, Rambo skinned the newly-caught elk, turned the hide inside out and rolled up in the warm fur to spend a comfortable night.

Everyone hooked up Monday morning, packed out the meat and made a trip to Raymond for a big meal.

Fine person. Great role model. Gifted athlete. Mentally tough. State champion.

The people who know and work with Mike Galeana just can’t heap enough praise on the Hoquiam senior.

The soft-spoken distance runner has made big strides since moving from Mexico to Grays Harbor in 1981. The talented young man — who is making his fourth straight appearance at state cross country — enters Saturday’s championships in Pasco as one of the favorites.

Don’t tell all those guys trailing him, but Galeana didn’t really want to run.

Dave Seymour, who coordinates A.J. West Elementary School’s one-mile run, was coaching Mike’s older brother, Jose, and recruited the younger Galeana when Mike was a fourth grader.

“I didn’t want to run,” he admits. “But coach got me out for one practice and I kept up with my brother.” He had tasted success and liked it.

He was good — and he keeps getting better.

The shy, unassuming 19-year-old won’t tell you that. Humility is as much his trademark as success. But his record speaks for itself.
