Egypt’s pyramids, the African Gold Coast, Rio and other beauties of Brazil, the verdure of the Australian landscape — all are “very interesting.”

But Mato Lonac, of the “fighting” Lonac family, liked none of them as well as his first glimpse of the Becker building when he returned home on leave the other day after two years of globe-trotting as a navy gunner on one of Uncle Sam’s merchant ships.

Lonac went even farther today. “I wouldn’t trade a square foot of my father’s backyard for any other place in the world,” he avowed.

He was graduated in 1937 from Weatherwax high school and is visiting his father, Charles and other relatives here. Three of his brothers are in the army.

• Death last night claimed Rev. T.T. Ove, 70, one of Aberdeen’s most loved citizens and former pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran church.

He came to Aberdeen with his wife and family in 1920 to take the pastorate of the Lutheran church, then located at First and E street. When the church was damaged by fire, he organized the building of the present church at Fourth and I streets, and arranged for installation of a pipe organ in it. He and his family occupied the parsonage at 411 North I until his resignation in June, due to ill health.

• Rocky Lindell, Hoquiam pulp and paper worker at Rayonier, is believed to have bagged the largest Harbor deer so far this season, according to forestry officials. Lindell brought in a 214-pound four-point buck from the Blue Mountain district in the Clemons Tree Farm.

The Washington state game commission has requested hunters to save deer and elk hides for tanning and manufacturing into army clothing. Dealers are paying $1 for large hides and 50 cents for small ones.

John Goodwin and Todd Rhodes took the final main events, but Jim Oien and Terry Bower captured season championships at Elma National Raceway.

Despite not placing in the final race, Elma’s Oien nosed out Keith Crowell of Aberdeen by seven points in the street stock season standing.

Bower, of Oakville, prevented father and son season titles by topping Jim Oien Jr. by 34 points in the bomber classification.
