With Harbor Plywood shutting down three days next week for lack of logs, and other mills threatened by closure or major curtailment of operations, Grays Harbor industrial management, labor and business men moved swiftly and cooperatively today toward relieving the acute log shortage.

A Grays Harbor war production council was formed last night and framed a request to the war production board for opening of big government timbers stands on the Olympic peninsula to provide logs for the Harbor’s shortage-beset mills.

The old world shake-sawing record was sent permanently to oblivion Saturday at the hands of a 39-year-old shake sawyer in Lebam.

The sawyer, Tom Jewett, split 640 bundles of shakes during an eight-hour overtime shift Saturday at the HKW Shake Co, breaking the previous world record of 502 bundles in the same length of time.

Jewitt said he got an extra $200 for his work for the overtime and production.

“I just pushed it more,” Jewitt explained this morning. “I just got in there and worked harder.”

Then Jewitt added, “I couldn’t lift by arm Saturday after work!”

• Rumors of substantial layoffs at The Lamb-Grays Harbor Co. in Hoquiam have some validity, but there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

Rumors have circulated recently that close to 60 people have lost their jobs at the company that designs and produces equipment for the pulp and paper industry around the world.

David Lamb, secretary/treasurer for the company and grandson of its founder, said this morning that up to 10 people have been laid off from the Hoquiam facility recently and perhaps in the neighborhood of 60 to 70 people over the past year.

Still, with rehires, the company is employing about 20 more at its Hoquiam operations than it was a year ago, he said. Total employment at Lamb in Hoquiam is 308, Lamb reported.

• Six Grays Harbor players were named to the all-Black Hills League football team, chosen from coaches’ all-opponent teams.

Aberdeen’s Saul Heikkila, Jason McEndoo, Justin Walker, Matt Cagan and Randy Lamont and Hoquiam’s Denny Hinchen were included on a 35-player first team.
