A drive to recruit more aircraft spotters for the East Hoquiam warning post will be started Monday, Mrs. Ernest Boettcher, chief spotter, announced today.

“There are a few people in Hoquiam who have been carrying the entire load since the beginning of the war and it’s time that they got some relief,” Mrs. Boettcher said. “People must realize that the Pacific coast is not yet safe from enemy air attack,” she added.

Launched seven years ago to revitalize a tired timber town, Urban Renewal is headed for the last roundup, leaving behind the promise that a modern shopping center will soon sprout from land once monopolized by the weather-beaten mercantile relics of Hoquiam’s lusty youth.

The city council last night unanimously approved sale of the 4½-block downtown Urban Renewal project to Auburn realtor David Morgan for $230,000.

All smiles, Morgan said construction work on the $1.75 million Harbor Mall shopping center will start in June of 1969. “We plan on celebrating our grand opening about this time next year,” he added.

• Hoquiam recorded its first boys’ golf victory in several years by outshooting Shelton, 179-191, in a Black Hills League opener Thursday at Alberbrook Country Club.

Jason Dewey and Jon Parker led the Grizzlies with 39s. Hoquiam had to use the scores of all four golfers who finished because Brandon Ferguson and Rick Lockhart ran out of balls on Alderbrook’s exacting front nine.

Grizzly coach Walt Wegener believes the victory to be Hoquiam’s first in boys’ golf since the early 1980s.

• Twice staging dramatic late-inning comebacks, the Casa Mia of Hoquiam outlasted the Frontier Saloon of Overbrook, Pa., 13-12, in eight innings, in the opening round of the U.S. Women’s Class D Slow Pitch Tournament Thursday at Kingman, Ariz.

Tanya Bowers went 5 for 5, while Rhonda Skolrood added four hits, and Dorrie Rossmaier and Sue Kalama chipped in with three hits apiece.
