Grays Harbor’s purse seine and big trawl boats may be carrying business-like small cannons to sea this year while the trolling boats bristle with machine guns.

Approval of a plan to arm the west coast fishing boats is being sought in Washington, D.C. While Harbor fishermen said today the trolling boats here generally are too small and frail to sustain firing of light cannons, they have space and stability enough for machine guns. Several said they thought the government should at least arm them with rifles, pointing out that the army and navy probably have many old model weapons on hand.

They also hope that government war risk insurance on their boats and lives may be available by the time the 1942 season gets under way. As an armed coastal defense auxiliary, the fishermen believe they would be entitled to government compensation should they loose their boats and peril their lives in brushes with enemy subs.
