More than 100 community members attended an open house at the Ocean Shores Fire Department station on Point Brown Avenue Oct. 12 to mark Fire Prevention Week.

“These guys all worked very hard putting this together,” said Fire Chief David Bathke, gesturing toward the OSFD personnel leading the various activities and demonstrations.

The event had something for everyone, with several educational displays including the Ocean Shores Public Library, Oyhut Bay emergency preparedness, information on free smoke detectors, the local Citizens Emergency Response Team, plus popcorn, hot dogs and other refreshments. Representatives of Rite Aid of Aberdeen were on hand to offer flu shots.

A highlight was the opportunity for kids to don firefighter costumes and pose for pictures beside one of the fire engines. The evening also included demonstrations of vehicle extrication techniques including use of the “jaws of life,” and extinguishing a vehicle fire.

OSFD also will host a Halloween party Oct. 31 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center.
