7th Street Kids to present ‘Matilda the Musical’

The 7th Street Kids will be presenting “Matilda the Musical” this week in Hoquiam.

Based on Roald Dahl’s book, “Matilda” is the story of a little girl with a special power (played here by Gabby Abruscato), whose crass and cruel parents send her to a school run by the even meaner Miss Trunchbull. Miss Trunchbull (Aiden Brown) delights in punishing children who don’t follow the rules, tossing them in the “chokey” if they really annoy her.

But Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey (Emma Dorsch), is as sweet as her name. She and Matilda form a strong bond as the small but courageous girl rallies her classmates to foil the terrible Miss Trunchbull.

“Matilda the Musical” is the award-winning product of the imaginations of Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin. Fans of the film who have not read the book might be surprised by some basic plot differences, but the story is every bit as entertaining for all ages.

The 7th Street Kids are among the first to present the show since the recent release of its rights. The 53 young cast members are directed by Julayne Fleury, with musical direction by Alex Eddy and choreography by Maija Nordin.

The curtain will rise at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at the 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $5 for children 12 and younger. They are available at Tinderbox Coffee in Aberdeen, Valu Drug in Montesano, Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, Mocha Madness in Ocean Shores and BrownPaperTickets.com. The theater box office will open one hour before each show.
